Energy Healing? What’s that?
Energy healing has existed for thousands of years in various cultures and societies. You may have heard of Ayurvedic or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The basic concept is this: There are energy channels that run along your body, like the blood flowing through your veins. By going about our lives and experiencing repetitive movements or traumatic events, these energy channels in our bodies become blocked and can cause chronic pain, suppressed or hypersexuality, depression, anxiety, or other ailments.
By paying attention and giving care to our bodies, we can learn where these blockages are located and begin the healing work necessary to fix them. Sometimes, the fix is physical. Other times, we must look inward. By being aware of our emotions and connecting with our Spirit, we can heal the body and open the energy channels once more. An energy healer is someone who can help channel this energy in a healing way.
There are many ways to perform energy healing. We offer Reiki and Tai Chi and hope to add more healing modalities in the future.
What is Reiki?
Reiki was developed in Japan by Mikao Usui in the early 1920’s. The idea behind Reiki is that there exists a universal (“rei”) life force (“ki”), a cosmic energy that binds us all and is very powerful. Many cultures have adopted a similar concept. You may have heard of Chi, Mana, Prana, and even the Force! In Japan, this life force is called Ki, and as a Reiki practitioner, our goal is to channel this energy to provide healing, relaxation, and empowerment.
The key word here is “channel”. A practitioner, if properly grounded, will not absorb your energy and you will not absorb theirs. Many cultures believe in “bad spirits” and “negative energies” and the best part about Reiki is that all of the energies involved are good and healing! You can think of it as a warm hug or a light massage. Reiki can’t hurt you. It can only benefit you. A practitioner does not really direct it, it goes where it needs to provide the most healing.
What does a typical REIKI session look like?
In my experience, every Reiki practitioner channels a bit differently, but the overall concept is the same. Before the Reiki begins to flow, it is helpful for the person receiving Reiki to set an intention with their healer. This can be something like “I would like to feel less pain in my back”, “I would like to let go of childhood trauma”, or “I would like to open my heart”. These intentions help to guide the session and can really be anything you want!
Once the intention is set, the healer can begin to channel Reiki. Typically, this will start with a cleanse and a scan of the auric field, which may guide the healer to certain points on the body. The cleansing is performed with a combination of herbs, crystals, and shakers to release any stagnant or negative energy (please let me know if you have any sensitivities to these). Once the negative energy is clear, we can then replace it with the positive light energy of Reiki.
Reiki is channeled from the Earth and the Sky through the practitioner into the person receiving Reiki. This is done by either hovering or placing the hands on various parts of the body such as the head, shoulders, stomach, legs, and feet, with your consent. Whether making physical contact or not, you will feel the warm healing energies. The session is typically performed in silence with relaxing music playing so that the person receiving can focus purely on the sensations and messages coming through.
Do virtual/phone sessions really work?
Yes! My first introduction to Reiki was actually through YouTube. I was struggling with anxiety and having trouble sleeping, but Reiki videos really helped me sleep and relax. In order to channel Reiki over a medium such as a video or a phone call, Reiki practitioners require special training. You can trust that anyone with the title of Reiki Master or Reiki Master Practitioner has had this training and will be able to help you. Here at The Spirit Oasis, we take issue with the term “master”, and so we prefer the title Reiki Practitioner. However, rest assured that if we are providing a service, we are qualified and trained to give it.
What are your qualifications?
Although I have been saying “we”, it’s really the Royal We, because The Spirit Oasis is just one person at the moment. My name is Diane and you can learn more about me here!
Education: I earned a B.S. in computer engineering in 2014 and another in ecology in 2022. In the coming years, I hope to begin a P.h.D program studying cognition in reptiles. For those of you more on the skeptical side with energetic healing, I consider myself a scientist (among many other labels). More and more research is coming out detailing the connection between mind and body, and most importantly that we have the power to correct any imbalances.
Energy Healing: I first encountered Reiki in the early 2010s and it has been a blessing to me ever since. In 2019, I began my Reiki training and by 2021, I had completed Reiki Levels 1, 2, and 3, including the advanced class, certifying me to practice and teach.
Martial Arts: I have been practicing Tai Chi since 2014. I instantly fell in love and quickly earned my black belt (or fringe) in 2016. I then taught for two years until 2018 and have begun teaching again as of 2023. I also teach Kung Fu and earned my first-degree brown belt in 2019.
Donation-based? What is an appropriate amount to donate?
A typical Reiki session ranges anywhere from $50 – $200 an hour and martial arts memberships range from $100 – $300 a month. While we hope to be able to provide a comfortable living for our healers, we understand that these rates are not affordable to everyone and sometimes it is those of us with a lack of funds that need the most healing.
If you are able to donate within the range listed above, that is greatly appreciated. If not, energetic trades come in a variety of ways so feel free to donate whatever you can, whether monetary or otherwise. We accept trades in the form of food, other healing modalities, counseling, and much more! Feel free to reach out if you would like to trade services.
